Taylor, the former president of two Long Island banks, retired to Florida at age 80. He remained alert and in robust health into his final years. Taylor was distantly related to President Zachary Taylor. When war broke 1 -out with Spain in 1898, he talked his father, Theodore, into letting him join the 71st Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the New York National Guard. He was 16 when his Company shipped out to follow Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders up San Juan Hill against entrenched Spanish positions in Cuba.

Of the 27,000 men who took part in the Cuban campaign, Taylor was the last survivor. 0 LOS ANGELES Dr. Sidney Cohen, 76, a psychiatrist known for his pioneering research on the effects of marijuana, cocaine, LSD and other mood-altering drugs, died here of heart failure. Cohen was a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles. He served as bead of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, bi director of the National Mental Health tute's division of narcotic addiction and drug abuse, and consultant to the White House Special Action Office for drug abuse education.

Cohen was among the first to warn that some users of LSD and other hallucinogens may have harrowing, seemingly schizophrenic flashbacks and nightmares. His work in the 1950s and '60s led to clinical studies on a wide variety of barbiturates, tranquilizers, amphetamines and hallucinogens.
