Molly 0'Day, 64, a country singer and banjo picker whose mournful mountain blues style is credited with influencing the sound of modern country music, died of cancer. Dolly Parton once said 0'Day's music profoundly influenced the way she sings today. Born as LaVerne Williamson in McVeigh, she came from the same eastern Kentucky hills that nurtured such country music greats as Loretta Lynn and Ricky Skaggs. 0'Day recorded 36 songs between 1946 and 1951, including her most famous, a late 1946 recording of "The Tramp on the Street." Among her other recordings were "Teardrops Falling in the Snow," "Don't Sell Daddy Any More Whiskey," and the Hank Williams creation, "The Singing Waterfall." She ended her career when she and her husband, Lynn Davis, dedicated themselves to working for the Church of God full-time. NEW YORK Arnold Lobel, 54, an award-winning children's book author and illustrator, died of cardiac arrest.

In his 26-year career, Lobel illustrated nearly 100 children's books and wrote the stories of many of them as well. Among his most popular works was a series of four books about a frog and a toad, best friends who shared many adventures. "Frog and Toad Together," the second in the series, was a 1973 Newbery Honor book, one of the most prestigious distinctions in children's literature. His books have been translated into dozens of foreign languages. MOSCOW Soviet explorer Yevgeny Tolstikov, 74, who led several pioneering expeditions to the Antarctic, died here.

Tolstikov gained renown during World War II for his polar flights and later made geographical discoveries in the arctic and Antarctic. He headed the third Soviet expedition to the Antarctic and trained many other Soviet polar explorers. Tolstikov was vice president of the official Friendship with Norway. BERLIN Peter Lorenz. 64, a conservative politician who was kidnapped by leftwing terrorists in 1975, died of a heart attack.

Lorenz, who had served as parliamentary state secretary in Chancellor Helmut Kohl's government, was kidnapped by three West German extremists while he was on his way to his Berlin office in February 1975. He was released six days later after authorities agreed to demands to allow five imprisoned West German terrorists to fly to South Yemen.
