The Mother (Dying Light) (2024)

The Mother is the main antagonist in Dying Light: The Following. She is the cult leader of her servants known as "The Faceless". She holds the power to keep her believers from turning into the infected. It is eventually revealed that she is a sentient-volatile.

She is voiced by Jean Gilpin.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Before, she was normal woman named Jasmine who was married to a man named Amir, better known as "The Colonel". While it is not expressly stated, the Colonel's access to the mysterious serum which, when converted to smoke, provides a temporary immunity to the base Harran Virus, coupled with his access to nuclear weapons of mass destructions, suggests that after the breakout began, the Colonel was the highest ranking military official left in the Harran countryside.

At some point after the virus spread beyond control, Jasmine was given a set of vials containing the serum which, as her condition suggests, rendered her a sentient volatile infected after consuming, it is also said she murdered her own children. Since then, she has been worshiped by locals and considered the leader of the cult group known as "The Faceless".

Dying Light: The Following[]

As Kyle goes out on mission to find her mother, he hears her voice speaking. She explains the tiredness as she cannot hold the title of a mother, there she explains what happened. She and her husband had a good, cozy life. However, after the outbreak they were bitten, as he was bleeding in her arms, he suggested her to run as he gave her the cigarette case and told her run, but she got dragged by believers, who came for their mother.

Later, she explains her husband does not smoke, but there was a map, keys and a code where it led her. Her and others found the vials, they questioned was a poison or medicine, before her mutation, she asked herself why did her husband do it.

When Kyle approaches her, she explains she was reborn due to someone returning the light. She takes off her mask and reveals her disfigured face due, which scares Kyle off, she explains him how light works here, as she is full of love, but when dark comes, she becomes mindless and homicidal monster and gives him example o how she mutilated her own kids in pieces but wants to keep the promise that she will be good mother.

She shows her happiness that Kyle found her, she tells him that it is his duty to accept the mercy of light, but Kyle asks for medicine, she explains to him there is no cure and that he is breathing the mist and he is slowly turning into a similar monster like her, she tells him built the fail-safe that can save the situation and destroy the virus but she asks Kyle is he ready to sacrifice thousands of lifes, including his.

Non-Canon Ending[]

If Kyle accepts his part, the mother will lead him to safe fail where the bomb is revealed, the Kyle has to type password and activate the bomb, once the warning starts, the mother thanks Kyle, before the explosion happens. Killing many lifes.

Canon Ending[]

Kyle rejects his offer and demands to be given medicine. The mother gets angry and forced him to drink liquid to understand her situation, he spits on her and calls her monster. She grabs him by neck and threats she will kill him for those she couldn't save, where she throws him off the balcony.

She started torments him how she can sense his fears, then she warns him that she hunts him. She appears but once Kyle kills her, she falls and disappears, turning out to not be the real mother, she then criticized him for wasting his potential before sending her false versions of him, once he kills them off. Kyle falls and start transforming and asks what is happening, the mother then says he will soon find out.

Her health bar shows and she threats Kyle that he will die by her hands, and goes out for him as alarms are heard, she screams and jumps into the area and fight Kyle, once the half of her health is taken down, her mask falls off.

When she is defeated, a cutscene plays where she attempts to warn the Kyle about the poison and he will kill them all, but Kyle snaps her head off and throws it as her headless corpse falls.
