Public school advocates are demanding that private school voucher reform be included in the state budget, as the governor and legislative leaders work behind the scenes to deal with a $1.3 billion deficit and a looming deadline to balance it.
Members of Save Our Schools Arizona, a public education advocacy group that has been a vocal opponent of Arizona’s school voucher system, joined Democratic state legislators and other supporters of public schools outside the Arizona Senate Wednesday morning before presenting a petition to lawmakers, signed by 3,000 Arizonans who insist that voucher reform be included in budget talks.

Yes and only the money I pay in, nobody eles's money should pay for my golf clubs or my kids religious schools if I choose to send them there. It's a now documented giveaway, 80% are now getting money that they previously paid on their own, where did this money come from?

This voucher nonsense is designed to defund our public schools which are already amongst the worst in the country. I have an acquaintance (evangelical Christian) who is brainwashing, I mean “home-schooling” 4 kids. He is absolutely delighted that taxpayers are now forking out almost $30k for his wife to take the kiddos on play dates.

So funny…..liberals find it a bad idea in allowing a parents tax dollar follow their youth’s k-12 education.
Crazy that these same individuals find it’s okay their adult children sign a dotted line to pay back a loan for a higher education, get said education, and have it payed back by you the taxpayers!!
Break the government ran system that’s clearly stealing from the taxpayers! Arizona for those that don’t know is a border state that our current government has allowed those to invade our country. These individuals are putting their children in our government funded system, that’s being funded by you the taxpayers!
Break the system, it’s clearly broke!

Such irony, the same taxpayers who grizzled and moaned about forgiving student loans, are now ever so happy to put in their snouts and snuffle public money into their private school programs. And their entitled spawn, who will go to religious schools (or stay home) to learn that there is no diversity in the world are simply going to compound the US’s problems with their terrifyingly narrow views. Giving secular dollars to religious schools is elitist, anti-democratic, and in thousands of communities racist and discriminatory. It’s a victory for Republicans, as always, gaining access to public dollars to fund private enterprise despite the overall poor performance of charter and religious schools that have stolen tax payer money intended to benefit all Americans. Short-term gain, long-term disaster.

You gotta love liberals ability to utilize race, simply to continue division in society!

Here's the worst part of what is going on in Arizona that’s not mentioned here: in addition to the school vouchers, parents and friends can "donate" money to private schools; there is no limit to the amount of the donation. That donation is then used as a FULL TAX CREDIT towards Arizona taxes. Schools use the donation specifically as offset toward tuition for a designated student, not as donation to the school. The funds come from the State's General Fund. The problem: one has to have significant tax exposure to AZ in order to be able to donate. So here's what's going on: higher income families are sending their kids to the most expensive private schools (in Phoenix, for example, Phoenix Country Day), at the expense of AZ citizens. For comparison, the limit for tax credit on donation to a public school is $200 for individual and $400 for married couple. This is the most messed up tax policy I ever heard of, and I am truly disgusted. It passed the Republican State legislature with no problem, because in theory this can be used by any family. But again- if one does not owe a significant amount of $ to state taxes, there's no real benefit. So the rich families partner up with friends etc to exploit the system, while our roads and infrastructures suffer, our public schools are underfunded, etc. And, as many have pointed out, not all private schools are legit in terms of education quality...

Need 100% accountability, just another republican giveaway. My tax dollars going to private religious schools and golf clubs.

“just another republican giveaway” which doesn’t even come close to the “Student loan forgiveness” which the imbecile in Chief is trying to buy votes with! Let the money follow the student! 🧑🎓 [thumbup][smile][wink] Deaton
