What is the European model for hurricanes called? ›

The European Medium Range Forecast Model is considered one of the premiere global forecasting model for the mid-latitudes. In 2006, the ECMWF made improvements that resulted in accurate hurricane forecasting.

Global models with worldwide weather forecasts

These models are all generally fairly accurate in predicting large scale patterns/features, but all will become less accurate through time. The ECMWF is generally considered to be the most accurate global model, with the US's GFS slightly behind.

The GFS (Global Forecast System) model produces forecasts out to 16 days, four times per day. The loop time steps are 6 hours from analysis time to 240 hours (10 days), then change to 12-hour time steps out to 384 hours (16 days).

The European model gained popularity in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy. Sandy's arrival was correctly forecasted by this model seven days before it made landfall on the East Coast. Most of the time, the European model is the most accurate.

It is well documented that the European model (run by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts or ECMWF) has historically performed better than the American model, Global Forecast System (GFS), run by NOAA.

But what exactly are these models, and why are they crucial for tracking storms? Spaghetti models are a collection of computer-generated simulations that predict the potential paths a hurricane or tropical storm might take.

In 2021, the GFS was the most accurate model followed by the European. Overall, the official forecast was the most accurate in terms of forecast track accuracy. The NHC also relies heavily on consensus models. The TVCN is a popular choice for tropical track forecasting.

The GFS has been better at reporting severe and extreme weather many times, but it also has not been a universally accurate source. GFS is trying to get better. Also to increase your confidence: both models also works with general accuracy of 95–96% for up to 12 hours, 85–95% for three days, and 65–80% for 10 days.

Technically, you do not get hurricanes in Europe. The continent can, however, be hit with winds gusting over 74 mph (119 kph), equivalent to a category 1 hurricane, but these are classified as 'extratropical cyclones' or 'European windstorms.'

The European model had the lowest probability of correctly making a genesis forecast – near 20% – but had the fewest false alarms. The GFS correctly made genesis forecasts 20 – 25% of the time but had more false alarms.

Even the European model, considered to be the most accurate forecaster of global weather patterns, skewed slightly northwest of Ian's eventual track, gradually shifting its predictions toward the southeast as the storm approached.
