Suzanne Hart, RN

Director of Nursing

Suzanne Hart brings to Heartwood advanced physical nursing skills and sincere empathetic compassion in caring for those facing addiction. Growing up in San Francisco, Suzanne acquired a young yearning to help others. Volunteering in various hospitals and local convalescent centers, she quickly learned nursing was her calling. After moving to Marin County and having two young boys, she began a nursing career that has spanned over 28 years. Suzanne worked the majority of her nursing in Emergency Rooms throughout the Bay Area. Her experience includes medical-surgical, cardiovascular, intensive care, psychiatric, and managerial nursing. She noted patient problems with addiction in every position she held and was often frustrated by discharge plans that ignored resources available to those in need of help. In addition to her professional experience, Suzanne has faced her own personal and family struggles with substance abuse. Suzanne entered her own path of recovery in 2000. She knows first hand how addiction can shatter your soul and those surrounding you. Suzanne believes in a physical, mental, spiritual, and team approach to treat the illness of addiction. Suzanne will combine her mature clinical nursing experience and personal life experience to help restore wellness in anyone putting their hand out for help. Suzanne knows when she does that, she strengthens her own inner soul and body.

Jesse Scheer

Chief Executive Officer

Jesse has been in recovery since 2013. Before getting sober, Jesse worked in the cannabis industry where he started one of the Bay Area’s first collectives. After growing it to the second largest non-profit in Northern California, it became clear to him that he needed a change of career, so he shifted his focus to helping others. Jesse went on to start a successful sober living company, as well as an internet marketplace platform for addiction recovery resources, both of which were designed to allow those in recovery to find and receive the help they need. Jesse was also instrumental in bringing the first residential detox-only facility to San Francisco in 2019. Jesse continues to remain grateful for the fact that every road in his past has led him here. He is convinced that he is here on borrowed time and that every day is an opportunity to help someone who is still suffering.

Michael Dempsey

Executive Director

Mike grew up in Southern California-Palos Verdes, and was very fortunate to call the beaches and coast his home. While surfing and the great outdoors provided lasting friendships and an early appreciation for all things California he quickly turned toward the working world. In his early teens that motivation led him to the restaurant business as he developed his various facets of service and management. University time focused his attention on a degree in TV and Film from Cal State University Long Beach and a young advertising and sales career took off. Mike rose in ranks at ABC Television and management soon after took him to positions in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and eventually settled in the Bay Area. By most outwardly appearances life seemed good, but the progression of his disease was taking a toll on ALL important aspects of his life. Along with professional help and relentless pursuit, he embraced a life of sobriety.

After 25+ years in the corporate world, Mike turned toward a career path that derived from a desire to help others who struggle with addiction. His mission was to combine his business background along with his drive to help others find the same meaningful purpose that he first found, many years ago in an addiction rehab facility. Mike feels the daily gift of sobriety is intended to be shared constantly, and any measured level of success comes from the ability to do just that. Heartwood Detox represents so much more than just a vocation. It has changed the progression of life’s journey in so many ways, and allowed for new healthy growth each day for clients and staff alike. Heartwood was founded on the core principles of healing the body, mind, and spirit in a kind and compassionate setting. Find what we found.

Jon Hudson

Director of Admissions

Originally from Northern California, Jon brings a calm, understanding, and nonjudgmental approach to everyone he comes in contact with. Having been in recovery himself since 2015, Jon has worked in many different facets of recovery. Initially, in 2016 Jon was involved in managing multiple sober living houses in the Bay Area where he developed a strong desire to help others find recovery. Moving on to working with individuals as a sober companion and recovery coach, Jon continued to help guide individuals and families through the early stages of recovery that often feel overwhelming and somewhat daunting. For the next 4 years, Jon held many different roles while working in a residential treatment center in the Bay Area. During this time, he further developed his understanding of addiction and his desire to help those find what works for them and their path. Outside of helping others find recovery, Jon enjoys spending time with his family, taking trips down the coast with his wife, playing golf with friends, and mountain biking around Marin County, where he now calls home.

Simone Archini

Director of Operations - Novato

Meet a woman of remarkable compassion and commitment, whose life journey has been defined by her unwavering dedication to helping others. With a diverse background in the medical field that spans several years, she has touched lives in various capacities, from running a private homecare facility, to advocating for children and young adults with disabilities. Her journey in healthcare wasn’t a straight line, but rather an interconnected web of experiences that continually fed her passion for service. Simone found herself working on and off in the medical field, always returning to her mission of improving lives.

One of her significant achievements was running a private homecare facility. Here, she brought her unique brand of compassionate care to the private sector, ensuring that every client received the personalized attention they deserved. She understood that care was not a one-size-fits-all model and made sure that each individual’s needs were met. Beyond the confines of healthcare establishments, she also extended her passion to the community, especially those living with disabilities. She became a staunch advocate for children and young adults with disabilities, creating bonds that transcended the usual patient-care provider relationship.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, her path took an unexpected turn. She decided to leave the medical field and venture into recovery work, a testament to her flexibility and willingness to respond to the changing needs of the community. In recovery, she continued her mission of service, bringing hope and healing to others. Simones’ story is one of compassion, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to service. It’s a story that reminds us all that in times of adversity, there are individuals ready to step in, lend a hand, and bring about positive change.
