GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas were the last to receive news that they had been freed.
The day came two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Since then, Black Americans have celebrated this day with picnics, concerts and other events. In 2021, Juneteenth was declared an official federal holiday.
