England v Iceland recap - Southgate's men lose final Euro 2024 friendly (1)

Harry Kane returned to captain England in their final Euro 2024 warm-up friendly against Iceland.

The Bayern Munich striker was one of eight changes to the team that beat Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday as Manchester City’s title winners also came in. Kyle Walker, Phil Foden and John Stones all started with Marc Guehi partnering the latter at centre-back. Aaron Ramsdale started in goal as Jordan Pickford was rested, with Anthony Gordon, Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer given a chance to impress from the start. Declan Rice also came into the starting XI.

Things started badly for England as Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson opened the scoring for Iceland, an all-too-easy break through the hosts’ defence allowing the Leuven striker to shoot through Stones’ legs and past Ramsdale to stun Wembley into near-silence. That's all from us for now

Thanks for sticking with us for updates from England v Iceland.

That's all from us on the live blog, but keep an eye on Mirror Football for all the fallout, including updates on that injury worry over John Stones.

KEY EVENT

FULL-TIME; England 0-1 Iceland

Not the way England will have wanted to prepare for the Euros.

After the promising performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are concerning sighs, not least when it comes to England's ability to break down opponents.

Plenty to think about.

Tom Victor

England inches from a leveller

Trent Alexander-Arnold puts a hopefull ball into the six-yard box and it takes a touch off a defender which brings it close to creeping inside the far corner of the net.

Behind for a corner which is headed away, and Joe Gomez fires well wide as the ball drops to him.

Tom Victor

Another Iceland change

Goalscorer Thorsteinsson makes way with moments left to play, and Valgeir Fridriksson comes on.

Will Thorsteinsson's goal prove to be the winner?

Tom Victor

Five minutes added on

Can England salvage anything in the closing stages?

They've only got five minutes to do it after the board for added time goes up.

Tom Victor

Now Mainoo has a go

We've seen Kobbie Mainoo curl in a couple this season from the left-hand side of the box, and he's tried to do it again.

No such luck this time, as the Man utd youngster can't keep his shot down.

Tom Victor

Valdimarsson forced into action

Trent Alexander-Arnold puts the kick into a dangerous area but Iceland's keeper is proactive, rushing out to push the ball clear from danger.

Into the final 10, and Iceland make another two changes with Sigurdsson and Johannesson entering the fray.

Tom Victor

Another Iceland yellow

Now it's Kolbeinn Finnsson into the book.

Bukayo Saka beats the stretching defender for pace and it's hard to argue with the yellow card.

Dangerous position for an England free-kick...

Tom Victor

Another change for England

It's not Guehi going off, but rather Cole Palmer.

Ebere Eze is on, with 15 minutes to do something special.

Tom Victor

Toney already posing a threat

Ivan Toney looks eager to make an impact from the bench and has already linked up well with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The latest combination ends with Iceland's defenders needing to be sharp to deny the striker.

At the other end, Marc Guehi takes the full force of an Iceland player's shot, going down after the ball hits his head, and it could be time for a concussion sub.

Tom Victor

Ramsdale with an important save

That ought to boost Aaron Ramsdale's confidence a bit.

He stayed on his line from a corner as Sverrir Ingi Ingason got free round the back, but was able to smother the defender's effort and keep it out.

Tom Victor

Changes all round

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Ivan Toney and Bukayo Saka are on for England.

Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Harry Kane and Anthony Gordon make way.

There's also an Iceland change, with Stefan Thordarson replacing Mikael Anderson.

Tom Victor

Iceland miss a golden chance

It could easily have been two there.

After a quick break, Thorsteinsson is wide open with the goal at his mercy, but slips at the crucial moment.

A big let-off for England.

Tom Victor

Scotland ahead in their warm-up

After a goalless first half against Finland, two goals just before the hour mark put Scotland in control.

The first was an Arttu Hoskonen own goal, with Lawrence Shankland making it two not long after.

Scotland's group stage opponents Germany have also scored now, with Kai Havertz bringing them level against Greece.

Tom Victor

Latest on Stones and Dunk

According to Channel 4, Stones was being seen to by medical staff after his early exit.

Fellow centre-back Lewis Dunk is said to be carrying a knock, and wasn't available from the bench.

Tom Victor

Now it's Palmer's turn to try

Cole Palmer flashes one into the side netting after linking up well with Harry Kane.

More of what we saw before the break, but still no home goal.

Tom Victor

England still threatening

The link-up play between Palmer and Foden has continued, with the latter dragging a shot just wide.

Iceland keeper Hakon Valdimarsson was scrambling, and might not have got there had the shot been bound for the far corner.

KEY EVENT

SECOND HALF: England 0-1 Iceland

Ezri Konsa replaces John Stones at the break, with England not taking a risk with the Man City man's fitness after a worrying first half moment.

Back underway at Wembley, and that's the only change.

Tom Victor

Here's how close England came

Football's a game of fine margins, and England learned that in the first half.

A marginally better connection from Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate's team would have drawn level, but it wasn't to be,

Tom Victor

England not the only ones trailing

Over in Germany, the Euro 2024 hosts are also behind.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored the only goal of the first half for Greece, against a Germany XI including the likes of Champions League winners Toni Rudiger and Toni Kroos.

Julian Nagelsmann's side have even less time to react, with their Euros opener coming next Friday against Scotland.

KEY EVENT

HALF-TIME; England 0-1 Iceland

And that's the half-time whistle.

England have 45 minutes to find a goal - or perhaps more - after plenty of possession but a 1-0 deficit against Iceland.

Tom Victor

First yellow card

Ingason drags back Guehi as England aim to break after an Iceland corner and he's the first man into the book.

Tom Victor

Changes to come... surely

There have been bright sparks for England, but Gareth Southgate may well be thinking about some changes at the break.

Let us know in the comments section what you'd change. Do England need a new shape? Have the forwards done enough so far?

Tom Victor

Lessons to learn for the Euros

If England are expecting to dominate possession in their group games - and they may well be - this feels like a good primer.

Iceland haven't looked desperate to play in England's half, but they've defended well and frustrated their hosts.

Of course, it's only a good lesson if it results in England finding a solution that they can take into the tournament proper.

Tom Victor

Scores around Europe

The big story of the other 7.45pm kick-offs comes from Poland, who lead 3-0 after half an hour against Ukraine.

Michał Probierz and his team are in a group with Austria, France and The Netherlands, but this may offer them some hope.

Tom Victor

Kane misses a sitter

England have been pushing for a leveller and if Harry Kane gets space like that again it surely won't be long.

Cole Palmer's ball into the box is perfect for the skipper, but he can only volley off target with the goal gaping.

Better now than at the Euros, eh?

Tom Victor

England threatening

A loose pass from Iceland's keeper gives Cole Palmer a sight of goal but Daniel Leo Gretarsson blocks wel.

The resulting corner is cleared, and the second ball in can't find an England head.

KEY EVENT

GOAL! England 0-1 Iceland

Well that came out of the blue... no pun intended.

It's Thorsteinsson with the goal, driving low through the legs of John Stones and beating Aaron Ramsdale.

Over to you, England...

Tom Victor

Not too many early chances

Aside from a Harry Kane snapshot, England have been tidy enough without doing a great deal at the danger end.

Anthony Gordon has shown some promising early movement after shaking off injust, though, and may well have the measure of his full-back.

Tom Victor

Some earlier results

In case you missed them earlier, Euro 2024 hopefuls Albania and the Czech Republic have already recorded friendly victories today.

Albania beat Azerbaijan 3-1, with their opponents' goal coming in the form of a late consolation.

The Czechs were more convincing score-wise as they took on Malta, with six different players netting in a 7-1 win.
