ON I-85 FIVE NORTHBOUND NEAR MILE MARKER 71, IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY. TROOPERS SAY A SINGLE CAR CRASH BLOCKED MULTIPLE LANES OF TRAFFIC, WHICH REOPENED HOURS LATER. DEPUTIES SAY THE DRIVER OF THE CAR RAN FROM THE SCENE INTO THE WOODS. HE WAS FOUND BY A TROOPER AND A FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL. THE MAN, LATER IDENTIFIED AS 25 YEAR OLD NICHOLAS PARELLA, TOLD OFFICIALS THAT HE HAD A GUN AND TO LET HIM KNOW WHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVED. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS WHEN FOUR DEPUTIES REACHED PARELLA, HE DID NOT COMPLY WITH NUMEROUS VERBAL REQUESTS, ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS. HE LIFTED HIS SHIRT TO REACH FOR AN OBJECT IN HIS WAISTBAND. THAT’S WHEN DEPUTIES SAY THEY FIRED THEIR WEAPONS, KILLING PAPPALA. NO DEPUTIES WERE INJURED. AN UPSTATE MAN WHO WAS BEHIND BARS ACCUSED OF KILLING A WOMAN ON TUESDAY HAS DIED. THE GREENVILLE COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE SAYS 39 YEAR OLD MICHAEL CLARKSON WAS FOUND IN CRITICAL CONDITION FRIDAY IN HIS CELL. THE CORONER SAYS CLARKSON WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, WHERE HE LATER DIED FROM HIS INJURIES ON SATURDAY. CLARKSON IS ACCUSED OF KILLING 40 YEAR OLD COLLEEN D’ORTONA. An 8-year-old child received life-saving care from several South Carolina first responders in the middle of a highway after being shot over the weekend, officials said Monday.(Video above is the Monday morning headlines for 6/3/24.)The Colleton County Fire and Rescue team said they got the call just after 11 p.m. Saturday about the child suffering from a gunshot wound in a reported drive-by shooting in the 100 block of London Lane north of Walterboro.While on the way, a deputy encountered a southbound car speeding toward Walterboro, officials said. A rescue unit was also responding in the same direction on Jefferies Highway or US Highway 15 and the car flagged him down near Southland Apartments. A medical helicopter was requested but was out of the county on another assignment, so the boy was taken by ambulance to Colleton Medical Center with several additional firefighter-paramedics to assist with his care, officials said.

The boy was stabilized until a medical helicopter arrived and flew him to Shawn Jenkins Children's Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston in critical condition, according to officials.
